The African Wildcat is a small, elusive feline widely distributed across Africa and considered one of the principal ancestors of the domestic cat. It has a slender build, relatively long legs and a sandy-grey to reddish-brown coat that provides excellent camouflage in dry grassland, savanna and semi-arid environments. Dark barring is typically visible on the legs and tail, with the tail ending in a distinctive dark tip.

Primarily nocturnal and solitary, the African Wildcat is an opportunistic predator feeding mainly on rodents, small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. Its alert posture, expressive facial features and beautifully patterned coat make it particularly well suited to naturalistic taxidermy displays.

Taxidermy Options

African Wildcats are most commonly presented as full mounts, where their natural movement and characteristic feline posture can be recreated effectively. Mounts may be displayed standing, walking, stalking or in other natural poses and can be incorporated into a custom habitat base or larger diorama.

Available presentation styles may include:

  • Full Mount
  • Full Mount with Natural Habitat Base
  • Custom Diorama
  • Multi-Species Diorama
