The Dassie, or Rock Hyrax, is a small, stocky mammal commonly found among rocky outcrops, cliffs and mountainous terrain throughout Southern Africa. Despite its rodent-like appearance, the dassie belongs to the order Hyracoidea and, remarkably, its closest living relatives include elephants and sirenians.

Dassies are highly social animals, often seen basking on exposed rocks or moving quickly between crevices where they seek shelter. Their compact bodies, short legs and dense grey-brown coats are ideally suited to their rocky habitat.

In taxidermy, the Dassie lends itself particularly well to naturalistic full mounts and habitat displays. Rock-style bases and wall-mounted presentations recreate the species' natural environment while allowing these smaller trophies to be displayed creatively without taking up valuable floor space.
