Indian Hog Deer (Axis porcinus)

The Hog Deer is a compact Asian deer native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. It takes its common name from its distinctive habit of lowering its head and moving through dense vegetation rather than leaping over obstacles like many other deer species.

Mature males carry antlers that typically comprise a brow tine and a forked upper beam, although additional points may occur. Karoo Taxidermy creates lifelike Hog Deer shoulder and full mounts that preserve the species’ stocky proportions, rich brown coat and distinctive antler formation.

Product information

Hog Deer are comparatively low-set and heavily built for their size, with short legs, a muscular neck and a compact body. Their coat may vary seasonally from dark brown to warmer reddish-brown, while some individuals display lighter markings or subtle spotting during the summer season.

The antlers of mature stags are usually three-tined, consisting of a brow tine and a terminal fork. Individual antler development can vary, however, and additional points are sometimes present.

Available taxidermy presentations may include:

  • Traditional shoulder mounts
  • Full mounts in standing poses
  • Custom habitat bases
  • Multiple-view or paired mount displays
  • European skull presentations
  • Bespoke deer compositions

The Hog Deer’s compact shape, fine facial anatomy, rounded ears and antler placement require careful species-specific sculpting. Full mounts can be presented standing naturally or with the head turned to suit the intended viewing direction.

Custom habitat scenery, vegetation and specialist bases may be added as separately quoted in Special Requests.
