The African Lion is one of the continent’s most iconic animals—a symbol of strength, courage and authority. Its powerful build, commanding expression and magnificent mane make it one of the most impressive centrepieces for an African trophy collection.
Male Lions are immediately recognisable by their manes, which can vary considerably in length, density and colour. Lionesses possess a more streamlined appearance, revealing the powerful musculature and agility that make them formidable hunters.
Lions are social cats that live in prides and are most commonly associated with African savannas and open grasslands. However, they can also inhabit woodland, scrub, mountainous regions and semi-arid environments.
At Karoo Taxidermy, every Lion and Lioness is individually assessed before mounting. Close attention is given to facial structure, eye setting, ear position, whisker placement, musculature, paw detail, mane arrangement and the natural movement of the body.

The facial expression plays an important role in determining the character of the finished mount. A Lion can be presented with a calm, closed-mouth expression or with a more alert or open-mouth expression suited to an active composition.
Creating a Commanding Display
A Lion full mount naturally becomes a focal point within a trophy room. The pose, base height and direction of movement should therefore be planned around the available display space.
Standing and walking mounts emphasise the Lion’s size and powerful anatomy. Sitting and resting poses create a composed, regal presence, while elevated rock bases add height without changing the classification—the complete animal remains a Full Mount.
A paired Lion and Lioness display creates a strong representation of the species’ social nature. These compositions can combine contrasting body positions, facial expressions and levels within the habitat base to produce a balanced display.
Predator-and-Prey Dioramas
Predator-and-prey dioramas capture movement, interaction and the drama of the African wilderness. The Lion collection shown here includes compositions featuring Nyala, Warthog, Cape Buffalo and Black-backed Jackal.
Every diorama is individually designed around the available specimens and the client’s trophy-room dimensions. The positioning of each animal, the direction of movement and the habitat detail must work together to create a believable visual story.
International Permits and Documentation
African Lions are listed under CITES Appendix II, while the population of India is listed under Appendix I. International transport and importation are therefore subject to permits and destination-country requirements. CITES – Lion
Karoo Taxidermy only accepts legally obtained trophies accompanied by the required documentation. All applicable export, import and destination-country requirements must be confirmed before shipment.
