With her unmistakable crown of long black-and-white quills, the African porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) is one of the continent’s most distinctive and characterful animals. Although naturally shy and primarily nocturnal, she becomes a formidable sight when threatened, raising and rattling her quills to make herself appear larger and warn potential predators.

A carefully crafted porcupine full mount preserves far more than her impressive quills. The posture, facial detail, feet and natural arrangement of the quill coat must all work together to recreate the animal’s cautious but confident character.

The three porcupines featured in this gallery are female African porcupines. Each mount has been individually posed and finished by the Karoo Taxidermy team to capture the unique form, texture and personality of this remarkable African species.

Because porcupine quills vary naturally in length, colouring and arrangement, every completed mount is genuinely one of a kind.
