Despite its name and rabbit-like appearance, the Springhare is not a hare. It is a distinctive African rodent recognised by its powerful hind legs, short forelimbs, large eyes and long tail with a dark brush-like tip.
Primarily nocturnal, Springhares spend the daylight hours sheltered inside underground burrows. After dark, they emerge to feed on grasses, roots and other plant material. Their enlarged hind legs allow them to move across open ground in a series of remarkable leaps, giving them an appearance often compared to a small kangaroo.
A successful Springhare mount must preserve the animal’s unusual proportions and alert character. Careful attention is given to the large reflective eyes, upright ears, compact forelimbs, powerful hindquarters and characteristic black-tipped tail.
