The Vaal Rhebuck is a graceful mountain antelope distinguished by its woolly grey coat, slender neck, large ears and exceptionally fine, upright horns. Its understated colouring and delicate proportions produce an elegant trophy that lends itself beautifully to both traditional and contemporary displays.
Known scientifically as Pelea capreolus, the Vaal Rhebuck is also widely called the Grey Rhebok or Grey Rhebuck. Its natural distribution is largely restricted to South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, making it a distinctive antelope of the southern African landscape. Mammal Diversity Database
Vaal Rhebuck are associated with open plateau grasslands, rocky hills and grassy mountain slopes. In the southern and western regions of their range, they are also found among the rocky hills of mountain fynbos and the Little Karoo. SANBI
The species has an unusually soft, dense and woolly coat. Its upper body varies from pale grey to greyish-brown, while the underparts and underside of the tail are white. The face and legs often display warmer yellowish or fawn colouring.
Mature males carry long, slender and almost parallel horns, which rise vertically before curving slightly forward near the tips. Females are hornless. The narrow muzzle, dark eyes and prominently marked ears contribute to the Vaal Rhebuck’s characteristically alert expression.
Primarily a browser, the Vaal Rhebuck feeds on leaves, shoots and low-growing plants. It obtains much of its moisture from its food and is therefore largely independent of permanent surface water. Its mountain habitat and exceptional awareness make it one of Southern Africa’s more challenging and rewarding antelope to pursue.

A shoulder mount places the focus on the species’ elegant horns, narrow face and large ears. Wall pedestals provide greater depth and movement, while a lying or standing full mount showcases the Vaal Rhebuck’s woolly coat, fine legs and distinctive white tail.
The Vaal Rhebuck is particularly well suited to rocky habitat bases inspired by its natural mountain environment. Stone effects, low-growing vegetation and subtle earth tones create an authentic setting without overpowering the animal.
Where suitable material is available, the exceptionally soft coat can also be incorporated into custom décor pieces such as fur cushions.
