Vervet Monkey Mounts
Go Back EnquireIntelligent, inquisitive and endlessly expressive, the Vervet Monkey offers remarkable possibilities for creative taxidermy. Its dexterous hands, mobile posture and recognisable facial expressions allow each mount to tell a story—whether presented naturally among branches or transformed into an imaginative custom display.
The Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) occurs across large parts of eastern and Southern Africa, including South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. Mammal Diversity Database
Its coat is predominantly grizzled grey with lighter underparts, a pale fringe surrounding the face and a distinctive dark facial mask. The hands, feet and tip of the long tail are also dark. Mature males are generally larger than females and are immediately recognisable by their brightly coloured blue scrotum.
Vervet Monkeys are exceptionally social and live in structured troops. Adult males and females form their own dominance hierarchies, while troop members communicate through an extensive range of calls, facial expressions and body language.
Their varied diet includes fruit, flowers, leaves, seeds and invertebrates, as well as occasional eggs and small vertebrates. By consuming fruit and carrying seeds away from the parent plants, Vervet Monkeys play an important ecological role as seed dispersers. SANBI
Recreating a Vervet Monkey requires exceptional attention to expression and anatomy. The position of the hands and feet, facial structure, eyes, posture and individually groomed facial hair are essential to producing a convincing mount.
Vervet Monkey mount options
Karoo Taxidermy offers a wide range of natural and imaginative presentations, including:
- Standing, seated and climbing full mounts
- Individual or paired branch displays
- Wall-mounted natural timber displays
- Multi-animal habitat dioramas
- European skull mounts
- Custom rock and vegetation bases
- “Three Wise Monkeys” displays
- Character-inspired and novelty presentations
- Client-designed special requests
A natural branch mount reflects the species’ arboreal behaviour and creates movement without requiring a large floor base. Multi-animal dioramas are ideal for portraying the social nature of Vervet Monkeys, while individual full mounts can be designed around a specific posture, expression or story.
For something more playful, Karoo Taxidermy can develop a bespoke character presentation, such as the traditional Three Wise Monkeys, themed accessories or another client-inspired concept.
Each Vervet Monkey is individually assessed, and the pose, expression, hand placement and presentation are planned around the condition and proportions of the specimen.
