Black Warthog Leather Duffel BagBold, unmistakable and full of character, the Warthog is one of Africa’s most recognisable animals. Its powerful head, prominent facial warts, coarse mane and sweeping ivory tusks create a trophy with tremendous presence.
The Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) occurs across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It inhabits open savannas, grasslands, floodplains, shrubland and lightly wooded areas, generally avoiding dense forest and extreme desert. SANBI
Despite its formidable appearance, the Warthog is primarily a grazer. It frequently kneels on its padded front knees while feeding on short grass and may also dig for roots, bulbs and tubers. Its broad snout, strong neck and curved tusks are well adapted to this ground-level feeding behaviour.
The animal’s “warts” are protective pads of dense facial tissue rather than true warts. They are particularly prominent in mature males and provide protection during confrontations. The tusks are enlarged canine teeth, with the upper pair curving dramatically upwards and the lower pair forming shorter, sharper weapons.
Warthogs often retreat into abandoned aardvark burrows, entering backwards so that their tusks face the entrance. When running, they characteristically hold their thin tail upright like a flag.
In taxidermy, the Warthog’s facial structure requires careful attention. The warts, eyelids, muzzle, tusks, ears and individually placed facial hair all contribute to its distinctive expression. The tusks must also be correctly aligned and securely supported.
