Waterbuck Back Skin

Powerful yet dignified, the Waterbuck is one of Africa’s most impressive antelope. Its shaggy coat, bold facial markings and magnificent forward-curving horns give the mature bull an unmistakable presence.

The Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) occurs through parts of eastern and Southern Africa. It favours savanna grasslands, open woodland, river valleys and floodplains, usually remaining within reach of a reliable water source. Animal Diversity Web

There are two principal forms: the Common Waterbuck and the Defassa Waterbuck. The Common Waterbuck, which occurs across southeastern Africa and South Africa, is distinguished by the conspicuous white elliptical ring around its rump. The Defassa Waterbuck has a solid white rump patch instead.

The Waterbuck’s coarse, shaggy coat ranges from greyish-brown to dark brown and often becomes darker with age. White markings appear around the muzzle, eyes, throat and rump. The neck carries a short mane, contributing to the mature bull’s powerful appearance.

Only males carry horns. These are strongly ringed, widely spaced and curve backwards before sweeping forward towards the tips. Mature horns can reach exceptional lengths and make the Waterbuck particularly well suited to pedestal and European presentations.

Despite its name, the Waterbuck does not live permanently in water. It remains close to rivers, dams and wetlands because these areas provide dependable grazing, drinking water and a possible escape route from predators.

The species’ coarse coat, long facial structure and heavy horns require careful anatomical work. Correct horn alignment, detailed facial finishing and meticulous grooming are essential to recreating the character of a mature Waterbuck.

A traditional shoulder mount creates a commanding presentation centred on the Waterbuck’s sweeping horns, white muzzle and shaggy neck. Wall and floor pedestals provide greater depth and allow the animal’s substantial shoulder structure to form part of the display.

A European skull mount offers a striking alternative, particularly when presented on a hardwood shield, table base or custom multi-species display. The Waterbuck’s strong horn shape gives these skull presentations tremendous visual impact.

The distinctive coat and white rump ring also lend themselves to back skins, wall portraits, fur cushions and custom furniture. These options allow suitable parts of the trophy to be incorporated into a practical or decorative heirloom.
